Collagen and Weight Loss: Why Skin and Joints Need Support Too

Most of the conversation about weight loss focuses on fat and muscle. But there is a third thing changing at the same time, and women on GLP-1 medications tend to notice it before anyone explains it: the skin and connective tissue.
As the body gets smaller, skin elasticity shifts. So do the tendons, ligaments, and joints that hold everything together. You might see it around the arms, the jaw, the inner thighs. Most women are not told this is coming until they are already in the middle of it. Why does skin change during weight loss?
Skin is largely made of collagen, the structural protein that gives it firmness and the ability to bounce back. When weight comes off, especially quickly, the skin has to adjust to a smaller frame. At the same time, the body's own collagen production naturally declines with age, so the tissue has less of what it needs right when demand goes up.

Does taking collagen actually do anything?
This is a fair question, because plenty of supplements make claims the research does not support. Collagen has better evidence than most. A systematic review of 19 randomized controlled trials, covering more than 1,100 participants who were mostly women, found that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation improved skin hydration and elasticity and reduced the appearance of wrinkles compared with placebo.
The word hydrolyzed matters. It means the collagen has been broken into smaller peptides the body can actually absorb and put to use, rather than large proteins that pass through. RETAIN uses hydrolyzed collagen peptides for that reason.
How much collagen do you need?
RETAIN includes 5 grams of hydrolyzed collagen peptides. That is a dose backed by real data, not a sprinkle added so collagen can appear on the label. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, women took either 2.5 grams or 5 grams of collagen peptides daily for 8 weeks, and both doses produced measurable improvements in skin elasticity compared with placebo.
You will see higher doses on the market, and the formula volume is a real constraint here. But 5 grams is a clinically meaningful amount, paired with the cofactor that makes it work.
Why collagen and vitamin C go together
Collagen synthesis depends on vitamin C. Without it, the body cannot properly build and stabilize new collagen, no matter how much raw material is available. This is why RETAIN includes 250 mg of vitamin C alongside the collagen, not as a separate marketing ingredient but as the cofactor the collagen needs to function. Taking collagen without adequate vitamin C is doing half the job.
Collagen is not only about skin
Skin gets the most attention because it is the most visible, but collagen is structural everywhere. It supports the tendons and ligaments around your joints, which matter more, not less, when you are still training through weight loss. As body composition changes and you keep moving, connective tissue is under the same adaptive demand as muscle. Supporting it helps the whole system hold together.
