Glycine on a GLP-1: What It Does and What It Doesn't

When I was formulating RETAIN, glycine was the ingredient people questioned most. It is small, it is cheap, and it shows up in a lot of formulas as filler with a long list of promised benefits attached. So I want to be straightforward about why it earned a place in mine, and just as straightforward about what a 500mg dose does not do.

What to know

  • Glycine is an amino acid your body uses constantly, and it makes up roughly a third of the amino acids in collagen.
  • During weight loss, connective tissue is under more demand while your intake of glycine-rich foods usually drops.
  • In RETAIN, glycine's job is tissue recovery: it works alongside the collagen and vitamin C in the formula.
  • At 500mg, glycine is a supporting ingredient. The sleep research you may have seen used much larger doses, and RETAIN doesn't make that claim.

What glycine actually is

Glycine is the smallest amino acid, and your body leans on it heavily. It appears in nearly every protein you make, and collagen depends on it more than anything else does. Roughly every third position in a collagen molecule is glycine. When your body builds or repairs tendon, ligament, skin, or the connective structure around muscle, glycine is a raw material it reaches for constantly.

Your body can make some glycine on its own. The rest comes from food, and the richest sources are the ones that mostly disappeared from modern eating: skin, connective tissue, slow-cooked cuts, bone broth. On a GLP-1, where portions shrink and protein variety usually narrows, glycine intake tends to drift down along with everything else.

Why it's in RETAIN

RETAIN includes 5g of hydrolyzed collagen and 250mg of vitamin C because connective tissue changes alongside your body during weight loss. Glycine rounds out that same job. It supports tissue recovery, and it supplies more of the amino acid that collagen synthesis draws on most.

The three work as a unit. Collagen provides the building blocks, vitamin C is the required cofactor for assembling them, and glycine adds to the pool your body pulls from during recovery. That is the whole story, and it is enough.

What 500mg doesn't do

You may have seen glycine discussed for sleep. That research exists, and the trial most often cited used 3 grams taken before bed, six times what is in a serving of RETAIN. I am not going to tell you 500mg will change your sleep, because at this dose the honest answer is that it is there for tissue recovery, not for the evening wind-down.

The same goes for the broader lists you sometimes see attached to glycine. A supporting ingredient dosed for a supporting role should be described that way. Every ingredient in RETAIN has one clear job, and glycine's is recovery support for the connective tissue layer.

What I'd actually focus on

If you're on a GLP-1 and thinking about connective tissue, the order of operations is the same one I follow myself. Keep protein as high as your appetite allows. Keep some resistance work in the week so your body has a reason to maintain what you've built. Then support the tissue layer that is changing alongside the muscle, which is the job the collagen, vitamin C, and glycine in RETAIN share.
